Simple Eco-Friendly Tips for a Happy, Healthy Earth Day

Blog post thumbnail

Earth Day is just three days away! How will you be celebrating?

At Integrative Nutrition, we make sustainable choices everyday to help support a healthier, happier life and planet. We know that even the smallest changes can greatly reduce our environmental impact.

That’s why we clean our work spaces and bathrooms with all-natural products, eat lunch with real plates and silverware, drink our coffee and tea from mugs, and use water filtering machines instead of water bottles (just to name a few!).

This Earth Day, you can join us to make an even bigger impact. For every student who enrolls by April 25, we’ll donate $50 to the Earth Day Network’s healthy school initiative. It’s our way of saying thanks to those who care about sustainable living and the future of the planet. After all, our good health depends on the health of our environment.

How else can you start living a cleaner, greener life? Add some or all of these small changes into your daily routine to make a big difference.

Happy Earth Day! Today’s the perfect day to start making simple changes that will help you live a happier, healthier, and greener life— and replacing your commercial makeup products is a great way to start!

Many of us pay close attention to what we put in our bodies. We read labels and minimize our chemical intake by choosing natural, whole foods.  But when it comes to cosmetics, we're not quite as diligent. Have you ever wondered what’s in your foundation, lipstick, or mascara? I bet you’d be surprised to learn that the ingredients found in most commercial makeup products are anything but pretty.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), “ the average woman uses 12 products containing 168 unique chemical ingredients every day.” That means that our skin, the largest organ in our body, could be absorbing hundreds of chemicals on a daily basis. The goods news is that there are tons of chemical free makeup products available that are healthy, effective, and help enhance your own natural beauty.

We’ve rounded up our favorite natural and healthy makeup products for you here:

How Alkaline Foods Create Whole Body Health

In order to create wellness, the human body must maintain a slightly alkaline pH balance, which ensures that there is adequate oxygen in the blood for cells to function normally.

By consuming too many acidic foods, such as meats, dairy, vegetable oils, and even certain grains and legumes - without properly balancing them with alkaline foods - you could be increasing your potential for disease.

Some of the symptoms of an overly acidic body include inflammation, digestive issues, Candida, irritability, low energy, and immune deficiency.

Joshua Rosenthal, Founder, Director, and Primary Teacher, of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, shares his wisdom about creating a healthy, happy life that helps transform the world.

Spring is a season of rebirth and renewal. You can see the first signs outside –green leaves, growing grass, and early flowers blossoming.

This season is also commonly thought of as a time for cleansing. Many people decide that they are going to go on a fast or detox, especially if they have put on weight during the winter months. Some clean clutter from their homes. Others transition into a new job or career.

I’ve been working in the field of nutrition for more than 25 years, and I know that being healthy is a daily practice. So is living a life that you want.

You can think of spring as a time to renew all of your biggest dreams and goals. Start planting the seeds of your dreams to make them happen. But you need to take daily action to make progress.

Arthritis, diabetes, psoriasis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism … these are just a few of the more than 100 different autoimmune diseases that affect 24 million Americans today. Autoimmune diseases, which occur when the immune system has gone awry and attacks its own tissues, now affect more women than heart disease and breast cancer combined.

While many doctors typically treat autoimmune disorders with powerful medications that shut off parts of the immune system, Integrative Nutrition guest speaker Dr. Susan Blum offers a different guide to self-healing in her new book The Immune System Recovery Plan. Dr. Blum is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Mount Sinai who cured herself of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis through a functional medicine approach.
