Here’s an easy food sensitivity test that you can do at home. It’s a modified version of the Coca Pulse Test.

Prestigious immunologist Dr. Arthur Coca published this test in 1956, and it provides an accessible way to trace a stress response to a certain food.

It is based on the fact that stress affects your pulse rate: if you are sensitive or allergic to a food, ingesting that food will immediately cause stress, which will increase your pulse rate.

Dr. Coca’s book is now public domain and is available free on the internet. Look it up to learn more.

Although it’s free and doesn’t require any equipment, I find Coca Pulse test a bit time consuming and it can be hard to remember when to take your pulse. I prefer the LNT Coca Pulse Test.

“LNT” stands for Neuro-Lingual Testing, which uses the communication pathways between the mouth and the central nervous system. Simply tasting a food sends messages throughout the body, and the body will communicate through a quickened pulse if this food is not ideal for you.

This version of the pulse test allows you specifically test one food at a time and immediately learn if the food is beneficial or stressful to your body. Instructions for how to perform the test are in the comments.

Food sensitivities and even some food allergies don’t need to be permanent, they can heal with time with nourishing diet and healing of the leaky gut.

Do you track your food?

Tracking your food, feelings and reactions to the food you eat can be a useful exercise for gaining more insight into what you're putting in your body. It can also be a tedious endeavour that sucks all the joy out of eating. 😅

If you're going to invest the time - and it can be quite time-consuming if you include any variety in your diet - let's make sure it's not a waste.

You might want to track your food for a short period of time if:
1. You have a goal where hitting a specific macronutrient and/or caloric intake is important.

2. You're conducting an experiment and want to see how your hunger changes when you eat more protein and less fat, or if your sleep improves if you increase your total carbs by a certain amount.

3. You suspect you aren't eating the right amount. For example, some people find that keto diet dramatically suppresses their appetites to the point where they need to intentionally eat more.

You don't need to track your food if:
1. You feel good and aren't looking to change anything.

2. You stick to the same basic meals most of the time.

3. You just don't want to. Your desire to eat intuitively outweighs your desire to manage your food intake.

You shouldn’t track your food if it triggers unhealthy eating behaviours or anxiety, or it otherwise messes with your mental and emotional well-being. Saying all that, there's no point in stressing. You should view tracking as a helpful but imprecise method of gathering data. Don't micromanage to the point of causing yourself grief or anxiety.

Best food tracking apps?

There are lots of options out there. I personally like @myfitnesspal and @cronometer_official - both free apps and their desktop version have everything you need. The entries are all based on official food databases, so it's as accurate as you can get, and it provides pretty granular nutritional info.
